Nanaimo City Council has advanced rezoning for 2565 Departure Bay Road, paving the way for 19 new three-bedroom townhomes in one of the city's most established and amenity-rich neighbourhoods. The revised proposal includes a site-specific density limit and design changes to better integrate with the surrounding area while still delivering much-needed housing.
This is the type of housing that is often missing in today's market. These aren't small apartments, they are family-oriented townhomes in a location where residents can genuinely enjoy a walkable lifestyle.
Future residents will be just minutes from Departure Bay Beach, Drip Coffee, the waterfront, the waterpark, parks, shopping, schools, restaurants, and transit. Few locations in Nanaimo offer this combination of neighbourhood character, recreation, and everyday convenience.
The development also makes efficient use of a large urban property within an area already supported by existing infrastructure and services. By adding 19 new homes in a highly desirable neighbourhood, the project creates additional ownership opportunities for families, professionals, and downsizers who want to stay in Departure Bay without the cost and maintenance of a detached home.
As Nanaimo continues to grow, projects like this help provide more housing choice in locations where people want to live. Well-located, ground-oriented housing within walking distance of beaches, coffee shops, parks, and everyday amenities is exactly the kind of thoughtful growth that strengthens complete communities.
